Tourist attractions

High mountains and pristine verdant forests, invigorating mountain air and the gurgle of precipitous mountain streams, alpine meadows carpeted in flowers and gushing, foaming waterfalls; a home from home for holidaymakers and skiers, museums and beehives, orchards and springs of mineral water; hardworking, hospitable and smiling people – all that is Krasnaya Polyana.

Krasnaya Polyana is a small village spread across the wide valley of the river Mzymta, the largest on Russia’s Black Sea coast, at a height of 550 to 600 metres above sea level, between the spurs of the Main Caucasian Mountain Range and the Southern Ridge. The population of the village is not large - all of 5,000 inhabitants. Krasnaya Polyana is one of the principal bases for tourists discovering the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. The most popular tourist trails lead to Achishkho ridge and Mount Aibga, to the springs of naturally carbonated water in Pskhu and the mountain lake of Kardyvach. To the east, at the far end of the Mzymta valley, looms the mighty and mysterious Kardyvach plexus of mountains. The unforgettable panorama of five-peaked Mount Aigba is waiting to be discovered by you. Next to the viewing platform there is a museum and a former hunting lodge of the imperial family. Here visitors have a chance to encounter first-hand the flora and fauna of the Western Caucasus. Here you can also visit the museum in the former residence of Estonian writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare in the village of Esto-Sadok and find out about the life and work of this writer of classics of Estonian literature, who came to Krasnaya Polyana on several occasions to stay with his fellow countrymen. In the local history museum attached to Krasnaya Polyana school numerous exhibits, some of them totally unique, have been brought together with great care by highly knowledgeable people to recount the natural and human history of the area of their provenance. Among the interesting destinations for tourist excursions in the environs of Krasnaya Polyana one could also single out the ancient sacral relics – the dolmens – and the ruins of medieval fortresses. The primeval forests and mountain meadows of the Caucasus Nature Reserve are home to aurochs, chamois, deer, bison, bears and other creatures great and small. It is good being in Krasnaya Polyana at any time of the year. In winter you are surrounded by mountain peaks gleaming with snow, looking like something out of a fairytale, in spring by a riot of orchards and alpine meadows in bloom, in summer by the cool air of forests and rivers and in autumn by the golden sheen of falling leaves. And the freshness of the crystal-clear mountain air is always with you.
