History

Krasnaya Polyana encapsulates the ancient and recent history of the Caucasian Black Sea coast, a history which, like a drop of water filled with sunlight, reflects the story of the Motherland.

Krasnaya Polyana has a very venerable history, as is irrefutably testified by the results of archeological digs. In the surroundings of the village over 20 fortresses are to be found dating from the 6th to the 9th centuries AD. A number of atsanguars – ancient corrals for cattle – have survived on the alpine meadows, while in the closer surroundings of the village there are well-like burial sites and square burial chambers. In the distant past, the Mzymta valley formed the shortest trade route between the northern Caucasus and the Black Sea Coast, in whose ports numerous vessels landed from Greece, Rome, Byzantium and Genoa to take on board furs, honey, wax and fine woods.
